Yakushima and Tanegashima

In September 2003 we spent nine days on the islands of Yakushima and Tanegashima, off the southern coast of Kyushu.  Yakushima is a World Natural Heritage Site with the world's oldest cedar trees, Kyushu's highest peak, and beaches where sea turtles come to lay their eggs.  Tanegashima is home to Japan's space agency, NASDA, and rocket launch facility.  It was also the first place that Europeans (Portuguese) landed in Japan.  The island is home to some fine beaches, great surfing and decent snorkelling.  Because the southern islands of Okinawa are rather famous, Tanegashima has few tourists other than surfers and is laid back and cool.

Click on this thumbnail map of Kyushu to see where Yakushima and Tanegashima are.  Yakushima is the circular island at the very bottom of the map.  Tanegashima is the long, narrow island to the right of it.  Both islands are about a three hour ferry ride from Kagoshima city.

Somebody carried this all the way up here!
